It's All About the
Economy...
Dear
Friends & Neighbors,
In just the past few months we've seen
our economy under attack by soaring Oil
Prices, Declining Housing Values, and a Federal Budget
that's bulging at the seams. Amazingly,
through it all there has been plodding growth and no
rush for the exits in either the Stock Market or the
Financial Markets. That's a tribute to the
underlying strength of our economy. How much
better off would we be, though, if we managed
our economic matters more expertly from the federal
level?
Our Economy is our Future,
folks. We owe it to ourselves and to our children
to get it right. This week let's focus on Money
Matters as we move towards the momentous decision we'll
make collectively 164 Days from today.

| The Oil Dilemma
It is Memorial Day weekend and we are all mindful
of the start of the Summer Driving Season. With
the upsurge of prices at the pump showing no signs
of slowing should we just drive now despite the historic
highs because we plan on putting the car up on
blocks by Labor Day? I say NO.
There are things that we can do as individuals and
there are many things that our government can do to ease
and even reverse those soaring costs. It's all
about the Economy. As prices rise we will all,
unconsciously, use less gasoline. That, alone,
will have an impact. Meanwhile, we should let our
federal legislators know that there are several things
we need them to do to back us up. If they don't, all our
conservation will only serve to make more oil available
to emerging economies elsewhere around the world.
- The Federal Government can take steps to put its
own house in order. That means cutting back on
spending now to keep the Feds out of Capital
Markets which will let our Productive Economy use that
money for growth.
- The Federal Government can take steps to increase
the value of the US Dollar. That, alone will
reduce the per barrel price of crude oil we've heard
so much about.
- The Federal Government can look into dampening the
rampant speculation in oil prices that has added as
much to the number as increased demand has. If
we license traders in Uranium today because it is a
strategic resource and one which requires professional
qualifications for proper handling, should we do less
for oil?
 If
you and I can figure that out, why can't our
legislators? Is it because they are insulated from
the real world by the Bubble Inside the Beltway?
Maybe they should do what I'm doing and go talk to real
constituents in the places they really gather.
I've been to VFW Halls, Bean Suppers, and Little League
games in the past months because that's where the real
people are so that's where I can take the
pulse of the Second Congressional District. I am
like all those people. I have shared experiences
with every one of them, and with you. I know what
Oil is doing to you right now because it's doing it to
me, too. Naturally I hope that means you'll let me
go to work for you, come November.

Please Join in at this Week's
Fundraiser! Thursday, May 29th, at 6:00pm, on Federal
Hill

Governor Don Carcieri, Mayor Steve Laffey, Mayor
Scott Avedisian, Senators Dennis Algiers and Kevin
Breen, Representatives Bob Watson and Larry Ehrhardt,
and many others have pledged their support for Mark's
campaign for Congress. Won't you help, too?
Republican Candidates and Office Holders from local
and state races will be there to showcase the unified
stance of Rhode Island's GOP in the fight to wrestle our
finances back from the brink. It is this kind of
Grass Roots effort to finance our message of smaller
government that is more responsive to the people that
deserves your support as much as any single candidate
does. |

There is More to the Economy than Just Oil
While we're
concentrating on Gas Prices Let's Not Forget the
Rest Even
before the natural concern with gasoline prices all
Rhode Islanders have the goal of getting a Good Job and
paying for Good Housing for themselves and their
families. For there to be any chance of
realizing those aims there has to be a robust and
growing economy that will churn out the opportunity and
prosperity that has to be in place for us to do it.
You know the Economy is directly related to
our Quality of Life. I do, too. In fact
I saw that in action this week when I attended a
meeting of the Federated Rhode Island Sportsmen's
Clubs. Also attending were representatives of the
state's Department of Environmental Management, Fish
& Wildlife Division. These dedicated and
hardworking state employees are committed to helping
preserve habitat and to protecting our rich outdoor
tradition. Unfortunately, the cumulative effect of
all the unsustainable decisions that have been made by
our state legislature over the years will force
nearly half the Fish & Wildlife staff to retire
early and also threaten to prevent most of those
open positions from being re-filled. The
result? The open space and hunting & fishing
activities that we were all there to preserve
are in real danger. Bad economic decisions by
government can cause us all pain.
How do we change that? At the federal level
we can reduce expenditures and start changing the way we
compensate government employees so they can participate
in their own retirement and health planning through IRA
and HSA style programs. Federal revenues have gone
up consistently in recent years. The reason we're
in deficit is that budgets have gone up faster.
What does that suggest to you? Me, too. And
I think we better do it before we see a nation wide
version of the problem our sporting community
is facing right now. If we do make the federal
government live within its means, we'll keep it out of
the borrowing markets. Then all the money that's
available for investment can be used for economic
growth, not for sending an invoice to our
grandchildren.
The Federation of Rhode Island Sportsmen's Clubs
has a great slogan: No Child Left
Inside! If we don't get serious about our
economy and the impact on it from public budgets here in
the Ocean State there won't be any 'Outside' left for
them to go to. If we don't do the same thing at
the national level the consequences could be even more
dire. If you agree, please help me
DO something about
it. |

Some who read this may not yet agree that I should
be their candidate for Congress this year. There's
still time for me to convince them. Of those who
do think I'm on the right track, many will be unable to
join us in Providence this Thursday evening. We'll
miss you. If you do think I'm heading in the right
direction and you'd like to help out in some other way,
here's my suggestion: Tell Your Friends that there
is an alternative this year. Look just below and
you can Forward my Newsletter to others in your E-Mail
Address Book. When you do, ask them to start
trying to decide for themselves if its time for
Leadership for a change.
Sincerely,
Mark Zaccaria Mark
