The Price at
the Pump
 Let's
start with the Price of Gasoline. There's no
immediate shortage of Crude Oil. The reason the
Saudi's refused to increase their production is
because they can't move all of what they are
pumping today. The problem is with Refinery
Capacity. Here in the US we haven't built a
new oil refinery in 30 years or so, but our
population has has grown dramatically in that time
and everybody wants to drive. That was
OK while off shore refineries could make the extra
gasoline we needed. Now, though, the rise of
industrial economies in India and China have
increased the Demand for those finished products
while maxed out capacity has
limited their Supply. Surprise
Surprise, the price is going up. So
what is the 'Government' going to do about
it? How about moving forward with the citing
and construction of new American Refineries? How
about new exploration for oil deposits here in
America? How about clearing the way for the
development of profitable private sector
businesses offering alternative energy
sources?
We haven't built Refineries
because people don't want them in their back
yards. We haven't tapped known reserves in
ANWR or off Florida because of Environmental
concerns. That goes for new exploration in the
Dakotas, too. We haven't seen a lot of
capital-intensive alternative energy ventures
because government deficits have absorbed all the
available capital.
With a little more Leadership, for a change,
the people of Rhode Island's Second
District could be raising their voices with
others that encourage the improvements in
industrial infrastructure we need to increase our
own capacity to produce fuels. In the 1970's
we managed to build the Alaska Pipeline without
melting the Permafrost or ending caribou
migrations. With a little more Buzz from
Little Rhody do you think we could demand the same
levels of environmental protection for new
domestic crude production today? And what if
the people of the District started the move
towards Balanced Federal Budgets? What a
concept. With the Feds out of the borrowing
business do you think we'd have more Capital
Formation to fuel the growth of new businesses in
alternative energy and elsewhere? I
do.
If you do, too, your next move should be to
demand the leadership that I will supply in
Congress.

Dear
Friends & Neighbors,
This edition of
the Mark Zaccaria, District Two
(MZD2) Newsletter is dedicated to the
concept of Supply & Demand. It is
Economics 101 but people still overlook its
relevance to so many of the problems faced by
our nation today. Better yet, explaining
things observed in the real world using Supply
& Demand is not a partisan trick or some
GOP slight of hand. It's more like
the old saying that 'The Laws of Physics will be
Strictly Enforced.'
So let's see what this country
and this campaign look like when viewed through
the lens of Supply & Demand.

Carcieri
to Attend May 29th Fundraiser
In Campaign Economics there is one
universal corrilary to the Theory of Supply
& Demand. It is that the Supply of
Contributions has difficulty measuring up to the
Demand of the Campaign Plan. Happily,
Rhode Island Governor Donald Carcieri has agreed
to lend a hand in fighting this phenomenon in
the District 2 Race. He will join members
of the RI House and Senate along with Mark to
welcome members of the Rhode Island Business
Community for a Fundraiser and informal dialog
on the future of our state and nation. The
time is 6:00 - 9:00pm on Thursday, May 29th,
2008. The place is Cassarino's Restaurant,
on Attwels Avenue, in Providence.
Please support Mark Zaccaria's run for the
US Congress by planning to attend. Please
plan to use the opportunity to see for yourself
that the Republican Party in Rhode Island has a
vibrant, viable plan in place to make things
better in our state. Take special note
that this coordinated effort involves
Republicans from local races, through those
hoping to bring balance to the State
Legislature, to the Federal Candidates like
Mark. To get your Invitation Click

The Upside Potential to
Downsizing Government
 Our present Representative
in Congress has repeatedly supported legislation
proposing increases in the size and mandate of
the federal bureaucracy. Each time the
federal government grows in this way it absorbs
more of the authority each of us once had over
our own lives. No doubt this accumulation
of authority is initiated with the thought that
it will help people. Making laws like
this ignores human nature, though. People
feel better about themselves and their
accomplishments when they can select them and
undertake them on their own
authority.
Think about the relationship between
Responsibility and Authority. Responsible
behavior can only be expected of those who have
the authority over their actions to choose that
option. By growing the government we are
using more and more of our own hard earned
dollars to facilitate the inefficient
decisionmaking of institutional
government. That straps us for cash
individually even as it weighs us down with more
regulation. When the Supply of Tax Dollars
is depleted how will the Demands of a hungry
government be met?
Here's an alternative scenario. What
if the goal of government was not to be the
parent of all its citizens. What if the
role of government was to create an environment
that protected it's citizens from disorder so
they could be unhindered as they went about
their business as they saw fit?
Many suggest that's a naive pipe
dream. They have that
opinion because we're so far away from that
ideal right now that they can't see how
we'd actually get there. Mark Zaccaria
knows how to get there, though: Just set
the goal for ourselves and take the first step
in that direction.
It won't happen overnight. It won't
happen at all, though, if we don't select
political leadership that will manage that
change for us.

If you agree with me that our nation needs
to lean in the direction of less government
rather than more, I need your help. Please
forward this message to friends in your E-Mail
Address Book and ask them to take a look at my
campaign. Of course Financial
Contributions are also sorely needed.
Right now there is a David & Goliath
relationship between my campaign fund and that
of my opponent. If that's the case
throughout the campaign it won't matter how
'Right' my message is, no one will hear it and
your current Rep will get his fifth term.
To help me prevent that please Click Here. Finally,
though, the help that everyone in the Second
District needs from you is to have you stay
engaged in the decision making process underway
in this election.
