| Here's How We Can Liberate Our
Economy |
| We need to admire the inventiveness
again that puts new products in our hands by unleashing
our Creativity. We need to have faith in the
product safety standards we've already put in place and
let them do their job, rather than tinkering with
targets and smothering growth in
new bureaucracy. We need to highlight
Education as the tool most available to prepare each of
us to participate in this new economic feast.
We need Vigorous Leadership,
for a change!

The endorsements of the Governor and the State
Party Convention were gratifying, of course. But I
got them first and foremost because I worked
to organize a campaign that could win, and I
studied the issues of the day to adopt winning
positions. In the process of doing that homework
I've become convinced that the biggest problem in
America is the long list of burdensome restrictions
congress has placed on our productive economy.
As a hard working, prosperous culture we have
assumed that our strong and growing economy would always
be there for us. It's a bit like our assumption
that there would always be plenty of fresh air and clean
water close at hand. Now, however, we are
beginning to wonder whether or not the bounty of our
biosphere is really limitless. We
need to understand that we can't keep chaining sea
anchors to our productive economy while expecting it to
win the worldwide race to prosperity.
Over the years government has
imposed increasing tax levies on business not
directly related to worker or product safety. All
the while they have increased the number of permits and
inspections required which have actually slowed
down the processes of productivity. The result is
a once Promethean economy that is now chained to a
bureaucratic rock.
What can you and I do about it? Well, the
first thing is we can recognize the problem. Then
we must organize a Rescue Mission to Free the Economy so
it can be the Engine of our Growth
once again.
Read on to get a few Ideas how.

 In recent
days my opponent and I have been trading opinions in the press
on how best to deal with current energy costs, specifically
the historic highs we're facing right now for both Gasoline
and Home Heating Oil.
The incumbent is dead set against taking any special
measures to increase domestic crude oil production. His
argument seems to be that it would take too long for new crude
to come to market and that the risks to the environment,
especially in ANWR are too great.
Members of Congress get their gas for free from the
US Government. Our incumbent hasn't had to
buy his own gasoline since the price was around One Dollar per
Gallon.
On the other hand, I experience the pain at the pump
every week just like you do. But I also know a
short term meaningful effort to tap proven American Reserves
would result in immediate downward pressure on the oil market
speculation that is responsible for a portion of today's
inflated price of crude. In short, a real program to
produce American Oil would lower the price per barrel today,
even if it took a decade for the new stocks to be refined and
sent to the corner gas station. (And it won't take a Decade)
I also know that we have to move beyond oil because no
matter how much we produce at home we'll still be sending lots
of Petro-Dollars to the Middle East where they will be
converted into bullets and fired back at us on the
battlefield.
In the short term we need to use Oil because all our
present infrastructure is based on it. Farther out we
need to look at the French example of a largely nuclear
electrical grid. Times change. Today nuclear
energy is the ecologically sound choice as opposed to fossil
fuels. But don't stop there: In the long term we need to
move towards a Hydrogen Based Energy Economy. We have
the technology today. Now all we need is the Political
Will and a booming Economy to put us back in the Driver's
Seat.

 Last Saturday I was
pleased to accept Rob Paquin's invitation to camp out at his
home during Warwick's Gaspee Days Parade. Rob is
a GOP Candidate for the State House of Representatives,
in District 19. His front porch overlooks the parade route and
we each worked the crowd for half a mile in both directions,
letting them all know the Republicans were in the
house.
The parade commemorates the sinking of the good ship HMS
Gaspee on a sandbar just off shore from Rob's corner. It
was one of the incidents that preceded the Revolutionary
War. It was also the first time that the Rhode
Island Swamp Yankees were able to best the Royal Navy and so
make their own choices about the pursuit of happiness.
When the opportunity arose to take the British Revenue Cutter
the people of Warwick didn't think twice. They
instinctively jumped at the chance.
We have to be ready to make a stand that will be a lot
less violent but every bit as important to our
future. We have to be able to seize the initiative when
New Thinking comes to our productive economy and gets it
roaring again. We have to be the people who can provide
both the intellect and the productivity our emerging
industries will need. We have to be ready to invest our
labor and perhaps some of our equity in the process of making
new products and selling them around the world. That's
the easy part.
We must also have a government that will create
the economic environment we'll need and then stay out of
the way while the rest of us get to work. Creating that
environment means having a government that lives within its
means so there's no excess borrowing for deficit spending that
might otherwise be used for capital formation. Creating
that environment may mean re-thinking monetary policy and even
the Federal Reserve System that manages it. Creating
that environment means forging a foreign policy for the United
States that is more about fostering commerce than fomenting
conflict. Always remember, a government big enough to
give you everything you want is also big enough to take away
everything you have.
So join our movement to Liberate the Economy, and demand
a representative government that will aid you in that
cause. Don't vote for the Same-Old, Same-Old. Vote
for Leadership, for a
change. |
| Quote of the Week |
|
"I place economy among the first and
foremost virtues, and public debt as the greatest of dangers
to be feared... We must not let our rulers load us with
perpetual debt. We must make our choice between economy
and liberty, or profusion and servitude."
- Thomas Jefferson

Will you be part of the Rescue Party that pitches in to
Free the Economy? Do you see the rewards that we'll all
receive when our biggest problem is managing growth, once
again? Are you ready to make your own
contribution? Whether it's getting an education that
will count in the economy that lies ahead or using the talents
you've already practiced to solve problems and lower costs for
the rest of us, it's all important.
You know what I'll be doing in that effort. I'll be
getting ready to speak with your voice and vote your seat in
the US House.
Sincerely,
